Principals

  • Shauna Stinson – Concertmaster

    Shauna joined Sunnyside Symphony as a founding member in 2001 and became Concertmaster in 2024.

    She grew up in a house filled with music, thanks to her piano-teaching mother and a father who enjoyed playing piano duets. Shauna began piano at age five and violin soon after. Her first solo violin concert was at age twelve, and soon after she toured with the Walla Walla University Orchestra. She also played in the Blue Mountain Symphony and the Walla Walla Youth Orchestra. After college, she joined the Walla Walla Symphony for two seasons before moving to Portland.

    Shauna owns a commercial design company in Portland and lives in Damascus with her husband, Kevin. She enjoys baking, paddleboarding, and spending time with her family.

  • Andre Wang – Violin II

    Andre Wang has served on the SSO Board since 2016. He is also Principal Second Violin, a position he has held since the orchestra was established in 2002. Wang is General Counsel and Director of Government Affairs for the North Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and an adjunct instructor of Business Law at Mt. Hood Community College. He holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Golden Gate University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Pacific Union College.

    Wang currently serves on the Board of Directors of Adventist Health/Portland, the Board of Trustees of Pacific Union College, and on the Oregon Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He previously served on the boards of the Portland-Suzhou Sister City Association and the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce, where he also chaired the Government Affairs Committee.

  • Janice Hogue – Cello

    Janice Hogue has been playing with the orchestra since SSO's early years.

    She began cello in fifth grade after her very clever music teacher introduced the students to all the string instruments. Once she heard the sound of the cello, she tossed aside thoughts of playing the flute. During high school, she played in the Portland Youth Philharmonic (then known as the Portland Junior Symphony) and school orchestra. At Willamette University and then Oregon State, she played chamber music as she pursued studies for a pharmacy degree. Playing in chamber music groups continued after graduation.

    Retired from a pharmacy career at Adventist Medical Center, Janice and her husband enjoy spending time with their family and water sports.

  • Andrew Smith – Tuba

    Andrew Smith joined SSO in 2025 as Principal Tuba.

    His musical journey has taken him all over the world in a wide array of musical genres. Previously the Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Low Brass at Campbell University, he was also Principal Tuba in the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. Andrew has presented recitals and masterclasses all across the world.

    He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Ithaca College, a Master's Degree in Music Performance and Literature and Artist Leadership Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Performance from UNC Greensboro.

    He currently lives in Vancouver, WA, and conducts the Blueprint Wind Symphony.

  • Veronika Zeisset – Bassist

    Veronika Zeisset joined Sunnyside Symphony (SSO) in 2012 and became Principal Bass in 2018.

    Exposed to music early as her mother played piano and sang in a choir, Veronika began the recorder and then piano at age eight. At sixteen she started string bass lessons and fell in love with the instrument, joining the Olympic Youth Symphony, then the University of Washington Symphony. While in Budapest, Hungary, doing mission work, she continued to play in two orchestras. When she moved to Portland, she joined the Vancouver Symphony, and later SSO and Beaverton Symphony Orchestra.

    Veronika is a homemaker with two teenage boys and enjoys playing tennis, running, and hiking—especially on the tall mountains in the Austrian Alps.

  • Noel Lee – Viola

    Noel Lee joined the Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra in September 2018 and became Principal Viola in 2023.

    Noel’s love for classical music began at age five with piano lessons. At age nine, she convinced her parents to let her take violin lessons. She switched to viola in junior high and has never looked back. Some of the groups she has played with include the Bakersfield Youth Symphony, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, MIT Symphony Orchestra, La Jolla Symphony, and UC San Diego Chamber Orchestra.

    Noel is a cardiologist at The Vancouver Clinic. In her free time, she enjoys listening to classical music and dreaming about her next Disney trip.

  • Brian Fairbanks – Flute

    Brian joined Sunnyside Symphony in 2022 as Principal Flute.

    He serves as Choir Director at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Portland, where he leads three choirs from children through adults. Brian is a founding member of the Cathedral Trio, based in Seattle. Formed in 2009 by members of the Cathedral Choir at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, they play music for flute, viola, and harp. Brian was Associate Musician at St. Mark’s Cathedral for fourteen years, directing five choirs and serving as Chapel Organist. Brian is currently Parish Administrator at St. David of Wales parish in Portland.

    He enjoys reading, walking, baking, and practicing French (by reading children’s books—his French is not very good!).

  • Gustavo Chávez – Oboe

    Gustavo has played with Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra for several years and was named Principal Oboe in 2025.

    He is a Pacific Northwest-based oboist and English horn player from Oregon City. Gustavo studied music and finance at Oregon State University. Mentored by Jason Suddeth, Fred Korman, and Kelly Gronli, he has performed with ensembles across Oregon, including Corvallis Symphony, Salem Philharmonia, and Chehalem Symphony, and appeared as English horn soloist with the Tilikum Chamber Orchestra. One of his most memorable experiences was performing in a reading session with the Oregon Symphony.

    A dedicated educator, he enjoys volleyball, hiking, and trips to the coast.

  • Jordan Faulds – Horn

    Jordan joined SSO in 2023 as Principal Horn.

    She earned her Bachelor of Music in Performance in 2003 at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, studying under Jean Gaudreault. She toured with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in Canada and Japan. After graduation, she returned to Edmonton and played with Fractal Pattern, a contemporary instrumental ensemble.

    Jordan began music at age four with violin, finally switching to French horn in junior high. At age fourteen, she joined the Edmonton Youth Orchestra, and at eighteen, performed as soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in their young performers’ series.

    Jordan works as a management consultant and is pursuing graduate studies in the field of clinical mental health counseling.

  • Larry Coates – Trombone

    Larry joined Sunnyside Symphony in 2017, becoming Principal Trombone in 2019.

    He earned a Bachelor’s in Music and Music Education from California State University, Sacramento, and a Master’s in Conducting from Sam Houston University, studying primarily with Lester Lehr and Ernie Hills.

    A featured soloist with many orchestras, bands, and brass groups, he has played with the Camellia Symphony Orchestra, the California Winds, the Bay Bones, Pacific Crest Wind Symphony, Oregon Symphonic Band, Rose City Trombones, and Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. Larry has been an award-winning music teacher in Sacramento and Portland since 1998.

    He owns Wall-To-Wall Home Inspections, LLC, and enjoys volunteering at animal sanctuaries.

  • Dan Schmidt – Trumpet

    Description goes hereDr. Dan Schmidt holds degrees from the University of Nebraska, the University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music.

    Dan was an Air Force Officer for twenty years as a Band Commander/Conductor, commanding bands in California, Alaska, Louisiana, Washington, New Jersey, and Texas. From 1994 to 2007, he taught at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. In 2005, his Wind Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

    In 2007, he and his wife Susan retired from Hastings College and moved to the Northwest to be near their children and grandchildren. In addition to conducting the NWWS, Dan plays with Stumptown Brass Quintet, Beaverton Symphony Orchestra, and Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra.

  • Heather Henderson – Timpani

    Heather Henderson has been a member of the SSO since 2023 and became Principal Percussionist in 2025.

    In addition to her work with the orchestra, Heather is the Principal Percussionist for the Salem Philharmonia and is also an accomplished pianist. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Music Education and remains active in her local church, where she participates on the worship team.

    Outside of music, Heather enjoys supporting her nieces and nephews at their sporting events. Music runs in her family—her grandmother was a piano performer aboard the historic Queen Mary.

  • Dr. Anson Hancock – Bassoon

    Dr. Hancock joined Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra in 2019.

    Beginning the bassoon at fourteen, Anson has performed with regional orchestras in the Pacific Northwest and United Kingdom, including the Haffner Orchestra, Orpheus Choir & Hexham Festival Orchestra, Portsmouth Philharmonic Orchestra, Bellingham Symphony Orchestra, and ARCO-PDX.

    His other great passion, besides bassoon (and making reeds), is volcanology. Anson worked with prominent research institutions like the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology – Etna Observatory, and the Icelandic Meteorological Office. He has also lectured in physical volcanology in Sicily and Iceland.

  • Kathryn Schaffer – Clarinet

    Kathryn has been Principal Clarinet since the inception of the Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra in 2002.

    She began playing clarinet in 5th grade and today teaches all music – band, choir and handbells – in a K-8 school.
